In the Battle of Ceder Mountain, Virginia, near the Rappahannock River northwest of Richmond, Confederate troops under General Stonewall Jackson, planning a move northward in advance of General Lee's larger forces, defeated two brigades of Union forces led by General John Pope and General N. P. Banks. Badly outnumbered, the Union army suffered 2381 killed or wounded; the Confederates 1276.
