In the Battle of Chancellorsbille, 50 miles southwest of Washington, D.C., General RObert E. Lee won his greatest victory over huge Union forces under General Joseph Hooker. In the North, 17,275 were killed or wounded; in the South, 12,821. General Stonewall Jackson, one of the wounded, died a few days later.
