At the Battle of Chickamauga, Tennessee, Union forces under General William S. Rosecrans were defeated by troops under General Braxton Bragg. Both sides, evenly matched, saw over a quarter of their men killed or wounded. Union forces retreated to Chattanooga, Tennessee.
