The Seven Days Campaign ended with the indecisive Battle of Malvern Hill (Virginia). General Lee had started the campaign with an attack on McClellan's Union army at Mechanicsville, Virginia, on June 26. The Confederates gradually pushed the timid McClellan back to the safety of his base on the James River. McClellan's Peninsular Campaign had failed and his army was withdrawn. Casualties for the week stood at Union, 15,849; Confederate, 20,141.
