The Mountain Meadows Massacre resulted in the death of 120 emigrants headed for California. They were killed in Utah by Indians incited by the Mormon fanatic John D. Lee. Lee's justification was that he was retaliating against President Buchanan's order removing Brigham Young as governor of Utah.
Carruth, Gorton. "The Encyclopedia of American Facts and Dates". 10th Ed. New York: Harper Collins Publishers. ©1997.As you have cited the book as your source of information, I will amend my statement to say that your source of information is in serious error. It is reminiscent of fabricated lies dreamed up against the Mormons after the massacre with no real substance once you investigate the history of the massacre.
The Mormons who lived in the South West corner of Utah wiped out the Fancher wagon train. The Indians were blamed for the massacre by the Mormons as an afterthought in order to protect themselves. There were some Indians at the massacre but it is not known for sure that they started the incident.
John D. Lee was the only Mormon to be brought to trial for the massacre. There was upwards of 70 Mormons who were involved in the massacre. All of who were in the Mormon Militia at the time as well as the church. John D. Lee was the fourth man down the line of command and received his orders as to what to do with the pioneers in the wagon train. The Mormons took their orders from the church leaders as well as from those who were in charge of the military. Those who gave the orders were one in the same: church leaders and military commanders. I would be willing to bet that you are wondering why I am defending John D. Lee. Whenever history is twisted from the truth I will do my best to expose the truth. I have been working with some of the descendants of John D Lee for the past ten years in seeking out the truth of the massacre. This includes Stewart Lee Udall, former Sectary of the Interior, and other Udall’s ( Senator Morris) from Arizona and LDS church authorities. No I am not a Mormon and will not become one. Yes it did happen and the Mormons did the dastardly deed but based mainly on the fact that President Buchanan was sending troops into the Utah Territory and the Mormons did not know or fully understand why. There was a large amount of distrust against the federal government at that time.
Visit our WEB site at "http://www.mtn-meadows-assoc.com" (Mountain Meadows Association) to understand where we are now coming from. Go to "http://eddy.media.utah.edu/medsol/UCME/m/MOUNTAINMEADOW.html" (Mountain Meadows Massacre) and read the story there by Morris Shirts. This is close to the truth but with some reservations. One of Morris’s ancestors was on the ground at the meadows during the massacre. The we have three historians on staff to the association who could write a short description of the massacre for you if you would like. These people write history as it happened and not to protect church or family.
And if all else fails, read The Mountain Meadows Massacre” by Juanita Brooks. It is the only truly scholarly book on the subject to date and is the standard that all other books are compared against. Please let me know what you would like to do in order to replace the erroneous material that you now have on your WEB site. I will help in any way.
Yours truly:
