the first naval engagement ofthe Civil War took place at Pensacola, Florida. Lieutenant John Henry Russell sailed the frigate Colorado past shore batteries at night and, as day broke, with a force of 100 sailors and Mrines, went for the southern privateer Judah in the shipyard. After hand-to-hand fighting, the contingent burned the vessell to the waterline nd left with few losses. President Lincoln thanked Russell personally, and the Navy Department honored him.
