WARS - Civil War - Fort Pillow Massacre

1864

The Fort Pillow Massacre followed capture of the Union-held fort on the Mississippi River in Tennessee by the Confederate cavalry officer Maj. Gen. Nathan B. Forrest. Northern acounts, supported later by a federal investigation, held that the black Union troops were massacred in cold blood after the fort's surrender. Southern accounts denied the charge.
