At the twin battles of Seven Pines and Fair Oaks, Confederate forces under General Joseph E. Johston stalled the Union advance toward Richmond, Virginia, in General George B. McClellan's Peninsular Campaign. Johnston was wounded at Fair Oaks and succeeded by General Robert E. Lee.
