A mob in Valparaiso, Chile, attacked American sailors from the cruiser U.S.S. Baltimore. Two were killed, several wounded. War became imminent because of Chile's delay in making settlements. Chile finally paid a total of $75,000 to the injured and the heirs of the dead.
